Day 1–Worship God for who He is
Devotional
Worship, in all its beautiful and creative forms, is for God alone—and that is the theme for this first week. You will have your own preferences, desires, and needs, but throughout scripture, the focus of worship is God. Psalm 96 (NIV) is an incredible song of praise for who God is. You may have questions and doubts, struggles and challenges, but when you come to worship, you can focus on who God is. He is the One who saves (Psalm 96:2 NIV) and creates (Psalm 96:5 NIV). He is God of all the nations (Psalms 96:5 & 7 NIV) and is above all of creation (Psalms 96:11-13 NIV). The picture of worship in Revelation 4 (NIV) is one where God is fully revealed for who He is—the One who is worthy to receive glory and honour and power. Anything you might "get" out of worship is a by-product, but the reason for your worship must always be God. As you bring yourself to God in worship, try to take your focus off your needs and concerns. Focus on the attributes of God and remember that this is all about Him. In the words of one of the Church’s statements of belief, the main purpose of humanity is to “glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.” As we journey deeper into worship, why don’t you allow yourself to enjoy God for who He is?
Prayer
Father God, Lord of all creation, I come to You today and proclaim that You are great and most worthy of praise. I worship You for who You are, and, with the living creatures and elders, I lay my life before You again. Amen.
Application
Read Psalm 96 out loud, slowly, in praise and adoration. Then thank God that even though He is the Lord of all, He is present with you today, right where you are.

About this Plan

"Deeper In Worship" is a 28-day plan designed to help you grow in your love for God through a fuller understanding of why and how we worship. Worship is for God alone; it is deeply spiritual, often physical, and a journey into encountering the presence of God. The plan includes a daily Psalm and a New Testament passage. It finishes with a short devotional, a prayer, and a suggested application.
