When I was young, I loved the singer Amy Grant. She had great contemporary songs, but also sang many Christian songs, one of which came straight from Psalm 119. She would sing: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” That song was a reminder that God was there for me.
As I grew older, and the challenges and trials came, I would often cry for God to reveal Himself in the situation or answer the big question I had. However, Psalm 119:105 reminds us that God’s Word isn’t always a floodlight that illuminates everything. Sometimes it is a lamp—just bright enough to light our next few steps in the darkness.
The psalmist declares, even through suffering and danger, that he is anchored by God’s word—committing to it, clinging to it and even speaking its promises. In the midst of uncertainty, threat and grief, we can hold tight to the Word and the One who breathed it. He is walking with us, step by step.
How wonderful to know that God will be with us and guide us! Even if we don’t see the full picture, He does, and He walks with us.
Today, ponder this: How can you remind yourself that God is near?
