God of the Upgrade
A few weeks ago, my refrigerator decided to retire unannounced and without notice. It just wouldn’t close properly. I thought, maybe it’s trying to help me with quicker access to midnight snacks… or the enemy is plotting to run up my electric bill. Either way, I wasn’t amused.
So, I did what any modern adult does—I called the home warranty company. They sent a technician who took one look, ordered some parts, and told me it would be a simple fix. Spoiler alert: it wasn’t. He came back, but the fix didn’t work. He ordered more parts, returned yet again… still didn’t work. Then he hit me with the news that he’d have to order an entirely new door. At this point, I was lifting and pushing the fridge shut like a sumo wrestler to keep the milk cold.
In my frustration, I asked God, “When will this end?”
A few days later, I received a voicemail from a delivery company saying they were scheduled to install a refrigerator at my home. Confused, I called them back, ready to inform them that they must’ve dialed the wrong Shyann. After all, I was only supposed to be getting a door. But then, I called the home warranty company to double-check. “Oh yes,” the agent said casually, “we’ve decided to replace your entire refrigerator.”
Say what now?
Days later, a beautiful, upgraded fridge rolled into my kitchen. And guess what? It came with features I never had before—a working ice maker and a built-in water filter! The old one? It was already falling apart after eight years of wrestling matches and duct-tape prayers. But what I thought would be a patch job turned into a full-on upgrade. And it cost us nothing.
And that, my friends, is how God works.
We ask for a fix.
God plans an upgrade.
We expect a repair.
God releases restoration.
“Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think…”
— Ephesians 3:20 (NKJV)
Sometimes we get caught up in the frustration of what’s broken. We try to hold it together. Tape it. Push it. Force it. But God sees the bigger picture. He’s not in the business of merely repairing what’s faulty—He specializes in replacing what no longer serves us with something new, better, and often unexpected.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
— Isaiah 55:8 (NIV)
God knew my fridge was beyond a quick fix, just like He knows when areas of our lives—relationships, jobs, opportunities, even mindsets- need more than a part swap. He’s the God of the upgrade. And when He moves, He does it in style.
So, don't be discouraged the next time something breaks, or life feels stuck in “hold music” mode. You might be moments away from a divine delivery.
“Behold, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”
— Isaiah 43:19 (ESV)
Yes, indeed. Won’t He do it!
Prayer
God of abundance and surprise blessings, thank You for seeing beyond my limited requests and meeting my needs with divine upgrades. Forgive me for the times I settle for quick fixes when you’re preparing something new. Teach me to trust Your timing, Your process, and Your generosity. Please help me to wait in faith, even when things feel broken or delayed. You are doing something new, even when I can’t see it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Reflection
1. Is there an area in your life where you’ve been praying for a “repair” that God may be planning to restore or replace fully?
2. How can you shift your perspective to expect God’s best, even when His answer takes longer or looks different from what you imagined?
