Called to Serve Like Jesus
As you prepare to embark on your Trek, reflect on the words of Jesus in Mark 10:45:
"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." (NIV)
These words lie at the very heart of our calling as followers of Christ, especially for those stepping into mission work.
A Model of Selfless Service
In this verse, Jesus shows us the ultimate example of selfless service. Though He was divine, He chose humility—serving others instead of seeking to be served. He spent His time with the marginalised, healed the sick, comforted the broken, and ultimately gave His life as a ransom for our sins.
As a missionary, you are called to follow Christ’s example of humble, selfless service. Your mission isn’t about recognition or personal gain but about being a vessel of God’s grace and a beacon of His love to those in need. Remember, you aren’t the most important part of the mission; rather, God uses you as an instrument through which His redemptive work flows. Real ministry always benefits those served first.
Serving the Many
Jesus gave His life for “the many,” and His mission continues through all believers. Your Trek is a chance to partner with God by serving a wide variety of people from many backgrounds. Though you may not always see the full impact, every kind word, every encouraging action, and every act of love is planting seeds of hope and salvation.
The Bible speaks of this as “planting seeds” (1 Corinthians 3:6-7). Every encounter is an opportunity to share Christ’s love. Be intentional about how you speak and act—let everything reflect His character and grace.
A Heart of Sacrifice
Jesus’ service led Him to the greatest sacrifice of all—the cross. Likewise, your mission may require sacrifice and stepping outside your comfort zone. You might face difficulties, inconvenience, or moments of personal challenge. But these moments reveal the depth of your commitment and your willingness to serve in Christ’s footsteps.
Embrace these sacrifices as part of your mission, knowing that selflessness is the mark of true service and reflects Jesus’ heart.
Inspired by Christ’s Love
Ultimately, your mission is an expression of Christ’s love—His love for the lost, the hurting, and the broken. Serving others is a way to show the redemptive power of that love in action. As you serve, you’ll be reminded of God’s saving grace in your own life and how He has called and equipped you to “go and tell.”
As you set out on this Trek, carry Christ’s love deeply in your heart and let it shine through everything you do. Let Mark 10:45 be a daily reminder of your calling to serve just as Jesus served. And as you serve, watch for God’s transformative work in the lives you touch.
Begin to pray now, asking God to fill you with His servant’s heart and to use your mission to bring hope and healing to many.
