A Flexible Heart — Serving Others Above Self
As you prepare for your Trek, pause and reflect on the wise words of Paul in Philippians 2:3-4:
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others." (NIV)
Guard Against Selfish Ambition
When you enter the mission field, it’s natural to want to do well, to make an impact, and sometimes even to be recognised. But Paul warns us—selfish ambition has no place in Christ’s service. Ambition itself can be good when it’s focused on glorifying God and advancing His Kingdom. The danger lies in ambition that centres on personal gain or praise.
Paul also cautions against "vain conceit"—an empty pride that puts ourselves above God’s will. Humility is essential to knowing God deeply and serving Him well. As you embark on your mission, surrender any self-centred goals or desires that could block God’s work through you.
Value Others Above Yourself
Mission work calls for a flexible spirit. You’ll meet people with different cultures, ideas, and ways of doing things. Challenges and surprises are inevitable. When these moments come, remember Paul’s call to value others above yourself.
Imagine a community where everyone holds others in high regard—where no one feels less important or disregarded. This is the kind of unity Christ desires in His followers. Being flexible means being willing to shift your plans, adjust your preferences, and even sacrifice comfort for the good of those you serve.
Look Beyond Your Own Interests
While it’s normal to have personal preferences, mission life often requires setting them aside. Maybe you’ll change your schedule, learn new customs, or go without familiar comforts. This willingness to prioritise others is a mark of a servant heart.
You’re not alone in this mission. You are part of a team. When each person looks out for the interests of others, the whole team grows stronger, and the gospel’s impact multiplies.
Following Jesus’ Example of Flexibility
Jesus was the ultimate example of flexibility and humility. He met people where they were—whether religious leaders, outcasts, or everyday folks—and adapted His approach to meet their needs. Your flexible heart reflects His love and grace to those you serve.
Flexibility isn’t weakness—it’s strength and openness to God’s leading. It shows you’re ready to be used by Him, however He chooses.
As you step forward, let Philippians 2:3-4 inspire you to serve with a humble and flexible heart. Put others first, embrace change, and let the selflessness of Christ shine through you.
Take a moment now to pray, asking God to fill you with humility and a willingness to serve others with a flexible spirit.
