Pathways to Purpose

DAY 37 OF 49

Through this verse we see a beautiful example of a God – honouring friendship and example of loving others. Jonathon had every reason to oppose David – David was a threat to the throne. Yet Jonathon displayed love, choosing to protect David, even at a great personal cost. Jonathon and David made a covenant before the Lord and based their friendship on God's plan.

The story of David and Jonathan in 1 Samuel 20 is one of the most beautiful examples of loyalty, faith, and God-honouring friendship in Scripture. Jonathan, King Saul’s son, had every earthly reason to oppose David—David was a threat to his claim to the throne. Yet, instead of jealousy, Jonathan demonstrated selfless love, choosing to protect David even at great personal cost. Even when Saul sought to kill David, Jonathan remained faithful, helping David escape and trusting that God’s purpose would prevail.

Even when circumstances separated them, Jonathan and David trusted that God would uphold their covenant. Likewise, we can trust that God is always faithful, even when life takes unexpected turns.

Reflect on some friendships you have, are there any friendships where God's love can be reflected more?

Prayer:

Lord, thank You for the example of Jonathan and David. Help me to be a loyal and faithful friend, to trust in Your plans, and to reflect Your love in my relationships. Strengthen my faith to know that no matter the trials. Amen.
