Learning to Pray

DAY 11 OF 12

"Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I am giving it to you" (Genesis 13:17).

We cannot possibly study all the different "Fields of Prayer" in our short engagement with this Plan. We can only look at a few of the Fields. I hope you have already caught some of the thrill and potential of each one we’ve studied so far.

Today I want to look at a "Field" that has become much more prominent in recent years; Prayer Walking.

God not only told Abraham to leave Ur of the Chaldeans and go to the country He would show him, but when he arrived God told Abraham to "Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land for I am giving it to you."

Prayer Walking involves not only taking possession of our Inheritance but bringing that Inheritance to others. We do not "Prayer Walk" as imperialists - as if we come in and boot everyone else out - but like Christ (who went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom and healing every disease and illness Matthew 4:23). We walk as our Father’s sons and daughters both praying for those we see and proclaiming the Truths of the Kingdom over them and for them. To "Prayer Walk" is to walk in faith. It is to stand in our Kingdom Inheritance, to stand in the place where thousands of God’s faithful disciples have stood in previous centuries, and to join them in praying and proclaiming in the places where we walk, "Thy kingdom come."

The Scriptures give us a collection of prayers to pray when "Prayer Walking" – the fifteen Songs of Ascent; Psalms 120-134. These are wonderfully crafted statements of faith, blessing, and proclamation that the pilgrims used as they walked up to Jerusalem for the three Annual Temple Festivals. Each Psalm beautifully captures and expresses different moods of prayer during the pilgrimage.

Just as we learn to pray by praying, so we will learn to Prayer Walk by Prayer Walking. Over time as we persevere, (learning from what goes well, and from other times when we try something that proves not so good), we will learn how to pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all types of prayer (Ephesians 6:18).

About this Plan

Learning to Pray

The many, many different forms of Prayer are like Fields on a large Farm. You and I are like a farmer living in the center of the Farm. As we pray we move from Field to Field, from one type of Prayer to another. We go into some Fields every day, others only occasionally. Come and join us in this Devotion as we explore what that might look like as we learn to pray together.
