Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Daily Devotional

DAY 301 OF 365

The key God's Word is much more than a mere book. It's more than a collection of manuscripts and scrolls. It's greater than any human thoughts or ideas that have ever been captured by ink and parchment. It transcends anything that's come out of the minds of Plato, Aristotle, or Shakespeare. The Word of God is more than all this, because it's an active and efficient force that moves us towards holiness. The Psalmist expressed this perfectly when he wrote, "Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You [God]!" He's seizing on what he'd learned by personal experience and what we learn as we develop a familiarity with the Word. And that's this: When we read the scripture it has a way of working itself into our soul and safeguarding us against sin's pull and persuasion. If we're tired of falling to the same old temptation, we need to examine whether or not we're doing what's being described here in Psalm 119. We need to honestly assess if we're hiding the Word in our hearts, if we're investing the time to take it in, if we're allowing it to wash over and cleanse us on the inside. If not, then our future will only be filled with failure. But...if we finally come to see that nothing will change unless we change our attitude towards the Word; if we're daring enough to listen to what the Word of God says instead of the vain voices that fill the air of this world; if we decide we've been enslaved by sinful shackles long enough and are willing to reach for the key of scripture that will help release us...if that happens, and we consistently hide God's Word in our heart, then sin will lose its pull and persuasion. Help us to hide Your Word in our hearts, O Lord...and may it progressively move us towards a life of purity. God's Word is much more than a mere book. It's more than a collection of manuscripts and scrolls. It's greater than any human thoughts or ideas that have ever been captured by ink and parchment. Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
