13-Hazards of Your Health Re-read the verse at the top of the page. Now read it again. Ever been there? Of course you have. We all have...probably several times today already! If we're being totally honest, we're our own worst enemies. We're actually hazardous to our own health.
Why is that? Why do we have such a struggle with not doing what we want to do and doing what we hate? Paul answers that very question in the Book of Galatians:
For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish. (Galatians 5:17 NKJV)
The reason we don't do the things we know we ought to do and instead do the things we know we shouldn't do is this: There's a war within. Inside each of us, there's a conflict, a fight between two opposing forces, between the Spirit's agenda in our lives and between the flesh's agenda. The Spirit wants to lead us in what's right, and the flesh wants to lead us in sin.
What's Paul's purpose in pointing this out to us here in Romans? Keep in mind that he's already dealt with our sin from a positional angle. Positionally, we have been declared righteous by God through faith. In His judicial eyes, we are no longer sinners but saints.
Practically, however, it's another story. Sin is still an issue in our daily lives. And Paul is coming back to this practical pull sin still has on us because he wants us to see that just because our position is secure, we still have a practical need...a need that God has once again made perfect provision for...and that provision will be our next stop along the Romans road.
Think about it...
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
Why do we have such a struggle with not doing what we want to do and doing what we hate?
Think about it...
