17-No Matter What
The past several days have taken us on an incredible theological journey. We started out looking at the reality of God's wrath and judgment towards man's sin. Then we saw how absolutely everyone who has ever lived is guilty of sin and deserving of punishment. But as this bleak picture was painted for us, we were introduced to the truth of justification by faith.
However, the journey doesn't end there. Next, we see how the practical pull of sin is still a reality that the justified believer must contend with. But once again, a ray of hope pierces the darkness as we're introduced to the Holy Spirit's role in enabling us to overcome sin and walk in righteousness.
And now, as this first major segment of Romans comes to a close, the Apostle Paul does something that's a sort of spiritual exclamation mark. He closes out this discourse, which has covered a multitude of weighty subjects, with the one subject that matters most of all:
Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 8:37-39 (NKJV)
When all is said and done, it's the love of God that matters most. Without the love of God, nothing else really matters. All we've learned about justification by faith, the provision of the Spirit, God's eternal economy...none of that means anything if the Lord's heart doesn't explode with love for us.
But it does, and God's love in Christ Jesus our Lord is the hub that holds the spoke of every deep doctrine in its proper place. Before switching subjects, Paul wants us to know God's love matters most and that it's always there...no matter what.
Think about it...
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
