You're His choice
There's a teaching in the Bible known as the doctrine of election. Simply stated, it says God has chosen those who are His. Before we go any further, we need to understand that this isn't an obscure or random thought but an essential truth woven throughout the New Testament:
"You did not choose Me, but I chose you..." (John 15:16 NKJV)
He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world... (Ephesians 1:4 NKJV)
God from the beginning chose you for salvation... (2 Thessalonians 2:13 NKJV)
But you are a chosen generation...that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light... (1 Peter 2:9 NKJV)
We also see the concept of election reflected in Psalm 65:4: "Blessed is the man You choose...." God chooses us! This should be an unbelievable confidence builder for every believer because it's a reminder that our status with God is ultimately based on Him and not on us. It's not as if we won Him over-He's the one who wanted us!
Don't misunderstand: This doesn't mean we're relegated to some robotic role in our relationship with God. He's given us a measure of free will that we're responsible to use and exercise.
But at the end of the day, our spiritual standing as saints is predicated on God's choice and not our performance. That's a truth that can anchor and secure us through any storm we endure in this life. We didn't work our way into His heart, which means we can't work our way out of His heart either. We're His, because we're His choice.
Eternal Father, thank you for choosing us before we ever chose You. May we remember this whenever our hearts waver or worry about our spiritual standing.
Our spiritual standing as saints is predicated on God's choice and not our performance.
What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
