Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale Daily Devotional

DAY 116 OF 365

It Takes Two There's a delicate yet undeniable balance that exists in this universe between mankind's free will and God's overarching sovereignty. Just about anywhere you look, both are active and evident. This Psalm is no exception. We see mankind's free will and God's sovereignty side by side in this single verse. The free will of man is clearly expressed when the Psalmist's states, "I will...." That's not God talking; that's man. It represents a personal and independent decision to do something-in this case to cry out to the Most High God. Now notice how God's sovereignty is seen in the very next statement: "...to God who performs all things for me." What is that if not an acknowledgement that it's the Lord who is in ultimate control, and that He's sovereign and over all things. What a powerful fusion of man's free will and God's sovereignty! We see the place for man to exercise his will as well as God's place to sovereignly perform all things. But here's the thing we can't miss: Both sides of the equation are needed in order for the dynamic of relationship to exist and thrive. If life were just a matter of our free will, of exercising it independent of God's sovereignty, then it would be a very one-sided existence. The opposite is also true. If we had no opportunity to freely exercise our will, we'd be robots rather than children who choose intimacy with a Heavenly Father. God wants relationship with us, and real relationship takes two willing parties...which is what we see here with man's free will and God's sovereignty set side by side. Sovereign Lord, thank you for giving us the chance to choose to be in relationship with You. God wants relationship with us, and real relationship takes two willing parties...which is what we see here with man's free will and God's sovereignty set side by side. Think about it... What does this passage reveal to me about God? What does this passage reveal to me about myself? Based on this, what changes do I need to make? What is my prayer for today?
