Who's Who
When you pull back and look at all of Psalm 50, you'll find it's a lot like a two-sided coin. The first few verses describe God's relationship with those whose hearts are truly turned toward Him. These folks aren't perfect but are in covenantal relationship with Him.
When we reach verse sixteen, the coin flips. It's there that God turns His attention to the wicked. Their wickedness isn't in the fact that they're sinners but because they're not connected to Him. And because they lack relationship with Him, their lives leave a trail of wicked behavior that God is well aware of, and even lists.
God was perfectly aware of who was who. Undoubtedly, there were many on the wicked side of the coin that looked right, who said the right things at the right time to the right people. They had everyone fooled about who and what they really were...except God. He saw perfectly into their lives and at the end of the day knew the truth about them.
Here's the "take away truth" for us: God has perfect insight into our lives and isn't fooled. He knows who and what we are, whether we're in relationship with Him or not. This shouldn't inspire insecurity, but rather it ought to rouse reflection...reflection on who and what we really are.
Are we in relationship with God or simply going through the motions of some meaningless routine? Have we come into personal contact with the True and Living One, or have we skated through life without ever knowing Him? Is our faith genuine or pretend? These are good questions to ask, and they can only be answered by God and us.
Lord, You know every heart and You know who's who...may all who pray this prayer be Yours.
God has perfect insight into our lives and isn't fooled. He knows who and what we are, whether we're in relationship with Him or not.
Think about it...
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
