Tragic Trust
God's Word is often a word of warning. And when it is-when it warns or cautions us about something-it's because the Lord knows we really need it! He knows our hearts even better than we do, and He knows we have the potential and propensity to fall prey to a particular pitfall. Here, the Word warns us against the tragedy of trusting in our wealth or in the multitude of our riches.
Well, that's not something that I have to worry about. I'm not a very wealthy person! Be careful, because there's a greater principle at work here that relates to everyone. Whether we happen to have billions in trust funds or just a few pennies in our piggy bank, there's a human tendency to put our trust in things besides God. We're naturally inclined to stray from the place of total and utter dependence on the Lord that we're called to (John 15:5). Our sinful nature is wired to be independent and isolated from Him. And when we give in to that, we're prone to trusting in things apart from Him...and that is a tragic trust.
What's the remedy? Whether it's with our wealth, our health, or any other aspect of our lives, we have to be continually conscious that all our faith and trust must be in Him, the One who is Faithful and Trustworthy not only in this life but in the next!
But God will redeem my soul from the power of the grave... Psalm 49:15 (NKJV)
Forgive us, Lord, for putting our faith in anything other than You. Help us to heed the warnings in Your Word and protect us from tragic trust.

Think about it...
What does this passage reveal to me about God?
What does this passage reveal to me about myself?
Based on this, what changes do I need to make?
What is my prayer for today?
