Grief’s Unexpected Journey: 15 Comforting Devotions After Losing Someone You LoveSample

Through It All
Have you ever found yourself wishing that the Bible would give a little more detail about something? Take this story of Peter, for example, stepping out on the water to take those first few strides toward Jesus. The Bible simply says that when Peter saw the wind, “He was afraid”. But we can only imagine what that fear entailed. Maybe he heard a persistent voice in his head saying, See? You can’t trust this Jesus after all. Or, who do you think you are, believing you can rise above these waves? Maybe his mind was filled with thoughts of what lay beneath the water’s surface, or how deep it was, or what a bad idea it was for him to go out to Jesus in the first place.
Whether a person like Peter journeyed beside our Savior in the flesh or someone like us walks with Him in Spirit two thousand years later, we are all prone to listening to the voice of the enemy, placing doubts and fears in our minds. Let’s be honest—the waters we are sometimes called to walk on can seem overwhelming, the winds can be strong, and the waves can break all around us. We may hear all kinds of reasons in our minds why we’ll never make it. We know Jesus is there, and we fight to keep our eyes on Him, doing our best to trust Him in the tumult, but sometimes it just doesn’t feel like enough. That’s when He calls us beyond feeling to a place we may never have been before. When we cry out, “Lord, save me!” He invites us to stand firm on His promises, which are infinitely more powerful than any wind or wave that we will face in this life. He reminds us that His presence is all we need He’s not just waiting on the water—He’s with us in the boat, in every step we take, and through every struggle we will ever face.
Lord, sometimes the wind and the waves feel so overwhelming. Please help me to hold on to Your promises, no matter what.
