Grief’s Unexpected Journey: 15 Comforting Devotions After Losing Someone You LoveSample

Come Away
Navigating the journey of loss often entails responsibilities, interactions, and practical tasks that fall on our shoulders. It can be a busy time, and we can find ourselves looking for some much-needed moments of peace. If there are days when you find yourself overwhelmed, just remember, your heavenly Father is there to help restore you in every way. Sometimes, if we listen closely with our hearts, we can hear Him drawing us away for some quiet time with Him. This may take some hard-to-find energy and motivation on our part, but we can be sure that if He is calling us away, He will make a way. It may be setting aside part of a day for us to spend in a space that inspires us to connect with Him. It could be an overnight filled with whatever relaxes us and brings us peace. However it looks for you, our good God honors those steps we take toward Him. When we trust Him with our hearts— when we tell Him, Lord, this is overwhelming, but I know You are here to carry me through—He is surely delighted by our dependence on Him and will meet us where we are.
Jesus, in His fully human experience, knew the necessity of retreats. Mark’s Gospel tells us how He sought to be alone with His Father: “And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, He departed and went out to a desolate place, and there He prayed” (Mark 1:35 ESV). Later, He invited His disciples to come away with Him: “The apostles returned to Jesus from their ministry tour and told Him all they had done and taught. Then Jesus said, ‘Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile’” (Mark 6:30–31 NLT) Sometimes it’s tough to give ourselves permission to set aside quiet time, but when we do, we can discover God’s life-giving love in a special way. May you always hear His invitation to find peace in His presence.
Lord, help me to find rest in You when I need it most. You are my peace.
