Grief’s Unexpected Journey: 15 Comforting Devotions After Losing Someone You LoveSample

The Wonder of Creation
Throughout the centuries, humans have pointed to nature as a mighty display of God’s creative handiwork. “The heavens declare the glory of God,” says Psalm 19:1, “the skies proclaim the work of His hands” (NIV). Throughout our lives, perhaps even before we believed in a Creator, we couldn’t deny the magnificence of the life growing all around us, the land that supports us, or the sky that inspires awe and wonder as the stars appear one by one against a black canvas, night after night. Even if we aren’t particularly “outdoorsy,” nature touches our lives daily through the food we eat, the water we drink, and the sun that wakes us up and lights our way.
Our Maker intended to bless us with His creation: “God saw all that He had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1:31 NIV). Consider this gift as you walk through difficult times. Is there anything in your surroundings that brings you comfort or points to your loving Creator? Maybe flowers remind you of His beauty, or a calm body of water brings you a sense of His peace. Just as Jesus pointed to nature to illustrate many of His parables, we, too, can find meaning in the creation that surrounds us. Look at a tree, growing and flourishing with strength and vibrancy, and imagine how it once started as a tiny seed “But they delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season,” says Psalm 1:2–3 (NLT). This verse reminds us of God’s promises for those who trust in Him. Sometimes we feel like that tiny seed, awaiting a time of nurturing and growth; other times, we feel like the tree, bearing the fruit of God’s goodness in our lives. He knows that we go through different seasons, and He has even given us the seasons of the year to illustrate those transitions. Take some time today to consider His creation and how it might be speaking to you during your current season. Find comfort in knowing your Creator holds the universe in His hands.
Lord, Your creation is marvelous. Help me to see You in all You have made.
