Platforms vs. Pillars

DAY 7 OF 7

Have you ever received a bad performance review? I once did! I was accused of things I never did—it felt like they wanted me to leave voluntarily due to the organisation’s financial struggles. The plan didn’t work, but that’s a story for another day. 🙃

Being judged on performance is often unpleasant, yet it has become the norm in our society. The need to be successful seems more pressing than the need to develop a Godly character.

This is the result of living in a platform society. We desire validation above all else and, therefore, try to elevate ourselves above others; we create platforms.

This struggle isn’t new—it began with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden:

God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.” The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and she wanted the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. – Genesis 3:5-6

If they only ate the fruit, they could become like God and be elevated to His level.

The problem begins with believing the lie that elevation equals freedom. In reality, chasing attention and fulfilling personal desires often leaves you trapped, as the very platforms you create start to exploit and control you.

For Adam and Eve, it resulted in being separated from God instead of becoming more like Him (Genesis 3:23).

In my case, after trying everything to fix the situation, I was finally let go from a job that was so toxic; it wasn’t until afterwards that I realised how much it had drained me.

Hard work is great, but not when it is performance-driven! God called us to live a life of rest and worship—working not for human approval but as an act of praise to Him:

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. – Colossians 3:23-24

Performance is for people; worship is for God.

Let’s end this week with a prayer:

Heavenly Father, thank You that true freedom is found in You. Make me a pillar in Your Kingdom. Help me stand firm and seek You above all else. If I am given a platform, grant me the wisdom to use it well. In Jesus’ name, amen.
