In verse 17, Paul instructs us to not act as the Gentiles do (which, in this case, refers to anyone who is not a believer). When you put off the old self, you are putting off what you once were as a “Gentile” before becoming a new man: a follower of Christ. We must seek to be renewed in our minds, putting on the new self, which is created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness (v. 24).
