Beyond Mountains (S2-E8)Sample

What salt does
Have you ever wondered what Jesus meant when He called His disciples the "salt of the earth"? Salt mattered deeply in the ancient world, and its uses help us understand the identity and mission He gives to His followers.
1. Salt preserves
Before refrigerators existed, salt kept food from spoiling. It slowed decay. Jesus’ disciples are meant to do something similar in the world: to push back what destroys, to slow down what harms, to show a different way when everything seems to be unraveling.
Where anger escalates, a disciple brings peace.
Where corruption spreads, a disciple brings integrity.
Where despair grows, a disciple plants hope.
In a world that often decays, followers of Jesus preserve what is good.
2. Salt brings flavor
Salt makes food come alive. It draws out the flavors that are already there. In the same way, disciples help people “taste and see that the Lord is good” (Psalm 34:9). We first taste His goodness for ourselves, and then we share it through the way we live. Jesus calls us to be tastemakers in the world and bring flavor where flavor is lacking.
3. Salt can heal
Salt mixed with honey was a crucial part of ancient healing practices. That function fits the calling of a disciple too. Wherever there is brokenness – in bodies, relationships, emotions – Jesus calls His followers to participate in His healing work. Sometimes that looks like prayer, sometimes listening, sometimes forgiveness, sometimes practical help.
Ask Jesus today where He wants you to bring healing, even in small ways. He often uses quiet, ordinary moments to mend what is hurting.
Staying salty
Jesus warns that salt can lose its flavor if it becomes contaminated. The same is true spiritually. The more closely you stay connected to Him, the more you will preserve what is good, bring flavor where it’s missing, and participate in healing where it’s needed.
Reflection Questions
- Which aspect of salt speaks to you most right now — preserving, flavoring, or healing?
- How do you see followers of Jesus being the salt of the earth?
- How can you be “salty” this week?
Prayer
Lord, You call me the salt of the earth. Help me stay close to You so that Your goodness flows through me. Use me to preserve what is good, bring flavor where life feels flat, and offer healing where there is hurt. Make me available to You today. Amen.
