King & KingdomsSample

God does not despise those with a humble heart. The one whose heart is humble is a person who sees their own depravity and understands their need for God. David models this for us well in Psalm 51. In his book, Humilty, Gavin Ortlund describes humility as something that, "actually breeds strength and resilence because it frees us from the restricting needs of the ego -- the need to be in charge, the need to look good, the need to defend ourselves, and so on." David understood that what God wanted was not for David to polish himself up and hide his sinfulness, but to allow himself to be broken and humble before God. David's humble heart led David to throw himself at God's feet instead of running from Him in shame.
