DAY 357 OF 365

The U.S. Secret Service works with various agencies—federal, state, and local—to protect our president. They use the latest technology and monitor closely all the movements of our Chief Executive. Their mission is to keep him safe. Long ago, the author of Psalm 121 had no Secret Service to protect him. He depended entirely on the Lord. He gazes at the mountains surrounding his city and asks a sobering question, “Does my help come from the mountains?” He then answers his own question. “No, my help comes from the Lord who made not just the mountains but heaven and earth.” The psalmist declares his trust in the God of the universe. He is confident that God will not let him stumble. He says the One who watches over us does not even get sleepy. And the Lord does the job Himself. He does not delegate to a soldier or an angel. He says the Lord stands beside us as our protective shade during the day as well as during the night. The Lord keeps us safe from all harm as we go and come. He protects, guides, and blesses His children. Does this mean that God’s people will never face trouble? Of course, it does not mean that. What it does mean is that nothing can happen to a child of God that does not meet God’s approval. Either God takes us around the problem or He guides us through it to reach His blessings on the other side.
