DAY 331 OF 365

Nehemiah needed a favor from the king, so he prayed, and God touched the king's heart to give him what he needed immediately. Sometimes God answers prayer quickly. Other times God delays His answer. God promised to give Abraham the land of Canaan, but told him it would not happen for 400 years! God promised David that one of his sons would sit on his throne in Jerusalem forever. But 400 years later, David's dynasty was in shambles. The Babylonians destroyed Jerusalem and took all the leaders into exile. The writer of Psalm 89 laments the fall of his nation. He cannot fathom how God, who made such an ironclad promise to David, had seemingly gone back on His word. He says, "You have renounced your covenant with David; you have thrown his crown in the dust." Indeed, it did seem as if God has abandoned His promise—until Jesus Christ arrives on the scene. The Gospel writers demonstrate that He is the son of David. At His baptism, a voice from heaven declared, "This is my Beloved Son. In Him, I am well pleased. Listen to Him." A thousand years after making that promise to David, God kept His word. While Jesus is not physically in the world today, He is King and Lord even now. If God kept that promise after 1,000 years, we can trust Him to keep every promise He makes to us.
