Your Enemy Is a Dragon
Okay, so dragons don't really exist. And yet, although dragons aren't real, stories of them appear in literature of many different peoples over many millennia, and their general characteristics are well-known--they have enormous strength, scaly bodies, they breathe fire, and their heavy spiked tails are weapons too. But still, they are mythical creatures--does that make Satan mythical too?
No chance. The harsh reality of pain and death force us to see that evil is real, and so is Satan. St. John was allowed to see Satan in all his ugliness: "The dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to make war against the rest of her offspring--those who obey God's commandments and hold to the testimony of Jesus" (Revelation 12:17). John says that the dragon is filled with fury because he knows that his time is short.
This marvelous chapter of the Bible assures us, though, that Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, has slain the dragon. Through faith in him we become conquerors also, and we overcome the dragon "by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of [our] testimony" (Revelation 12:11). So where does that leave us? Respect the dragon? Yes. Fear the dragon? No.
