Our Offenses Are Many
On family pictures from my childhood you can count five children. But my mother frequently suspected that there was a sixth. His name was Not Me. Not Me was the child who smeared up the bathroom mirror, left toys all over the floor, and melted a plastic soldier on the stove. Not Me dropped chewing gum in the rug and broke the basement window.
The very first response of men and women who sin against God is denial. Not me! The Old Testament has many stories of the progressive spiritual deterioration of the people of Israel, and like you and me they at first stubbornly denied that they had a problem.
The prophet Isaiah helped them to see that the economic and military ruin that was coming upon them was a direct result of their acts of rebellion. "Our offenses are many in your sight, and our sins testify against us. Our offenses are ever with us, and we acknowledge our iniquities" (Isaiah 59:12). True self-awareness leads to sorrow. Godly sorrow leads to repentance. Repentance leads to faith in the one Savior who alone can bring us back to God.
