The Disciple’s Reflect on the Seventy-Two Being Sent
A Story to Remember
Albert McMakin was a twenty-four year old farmer who had recently come to faith in Christ. He was so full of enthusiasm that he filled a truck with people and took them to a meeting to hear about Jesus. There was a good-looking farmer's son whom he was especially keen to get to a meeting, but this young man was hard to persuade - he was busy falling in and out of love with different girls, and did not seem to be attracted to Christianity.
Eventually, Albert McMakin managed to persuade him to come by asking him to drive the truck. When they arrived, Albert's guest decided to go in and was spellbound by all that he heard. He went back again and again until one night he went forward and gave his life to Jesus Christ. That man - the driver of the truck - was Billy Graham. The year was 1934. Since then Billy Graham has presented the gospel to millions around the world. We cannot all be like Billy Graham, but we can all be like Albert McMakin - we can all bring our friends to Jesus, by going out to them.
A Prayer
Lord Jesus,
I am scared to be sent out as a lamb amongst wolves. I am happy to pray and ask that you might send out workers into the harvest - as long as I don't have to go too far. Yet you don't call us to comfort, but to the kingdom. Take this weak heart and make it bold. Take these blind eyes and let them truly see the harvest fields. Here I am, Lord. Send me out to wherever the harvest may be - at my work, in my home, in this community or elsewhere. Make me a willing agent for your work. Transform your church's call from 'come' to 'go'. We pray you will raise us up and send out workers to the harvest fields today. In Jesus' name. Amen
Journal Exercise
Think of three people who, as far as you know, do not yet know Christ. Write a prayer for each one that God might have mercy upon them, send them a gospel messenger, and open their hearts to respond so that they can have peace with God.
A Quote
“Search for a person who claims to have found Christ apart from someone else’s prayers, and your search may go on forever.”
– Dick Eastman
A Challenging Prayer
Call upon God to multiply the number of well trained persons lovingly dedicated to proclaiming the gospel.
