Shine Like a Superhero

Superman is honorable—he stands for hope and light. He aims to follow his code of ethics and fight for truth, justice and the American way. God calls us to something even higher and our code of ethics is inspired by Him! He calls us to shine like stars!

Do you like star gazing? When you’re outside at night, do you stare into the sky enamored by the vastness of it all? It’s amazing to think that God calls us to shine like one of those stars! In our verses today, God says that we will shine like stars as we hold firmly to the word of life—Jesus Himself. As we stand out and shine His love, others will be drawn toward His light.

These verses tell us that one of the ways to stand out as bright stars is to do things without complaining or arguing. Other themes of this chapter give us more answers. We are called to be unselfish and humble, walking in obedience and being aware of other people’s needs. We are to live in purity and hold firmly to the word of life. Our ultimate example is our Savior:

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:5-8).

Next time you find yourself staring into the night sky, remind yourself that those lights are an example to you! Their Creator has called you to shine as brightly for Him!

Suggested prayer: God, make me a bright light for you in a dark and evil world. May I shine your love by being selfless, humble and pure, walking in obedience to You. Help me hold fast to Jesus, the word of life. May I not be described as a cloudy evening, but instead shine brightly as Your child.
