The Super Power of Generosity

In Avengers 1 we find a world-class physicist using his talents in a humanitarian effort in Calcutta. Bruce Banner found himself immersed in fighting an endemic. He generously gave of his time and talents to help the people there. Perhaps Banner also has the super power of generosity!

Generosity, as it is presented in the Bible, is three-fold:

First, generosity points others to God. Our God is a God of abundance and He invites us to live in the fullness of life. When we are generous, we are imitating God and His character. As believers, we are to become more and more like Jesus through the process of sanctification.

Second, our generosity is in response to what God has done for us. Because Jesus loves us, we are called to love others. Likewise, because God has blessed us so abundantly, we are called to share it with others.

Third, generosity increases our faith. We are demonstrating that our faith is not based on material possessions. Instead, our faith is in God, the Creator of all. He is faithful to meet our needs.

Generosity yields an amazing crop! When we refresh others through giving, we are refreshed ourselves. As Luke 6:38 says, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

Let’s ask God for a generous heart so His love can be shared with others—like a refreshing drink of water. The Bible sums it up nicely in Acts 20:35, “…It is more blessed to give than to receive.” How true that is!

A suggested prayer: “God, create in me a generous heart. Give me eyes to see the needs of others, looking past self-interests and to those of others. Because of your blessings, may I share what I have with others.”
