The time had come for Joshua to boldly obey God in doing something very similar to his mentor Moses: crossing a vast body of water. Can you imagine the fear that Joshua may have had? All those years ago, he had seen Moses part the Red Sea, but now came the time for him to lead it himself! The first half of this passage has the people receiving instruction from the Lord through Joshua, and the second half sees the people being strong and courageous to carry out the Lord's commands.
In the Lord's power, the river stands completely still even though it is flooding season for the River Jordan. The people trust God, and He makes a way for them to cross into His promise.
Think it Over: How has God shown His trustworthiness and power in your life? Is there an area where you can trust Him more completely?
