Success Will Test You More Than Failure Man seems to be in a constant pursuit for a better life. More affluence, more influence and more success. In the Christian circle, we call these aspirations ‘blessings’. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not against blessings. I believe with all my heart that God has called us to be blessed and to be a blessing. Yet today’s scripture stands out as a ‘warning sign’ to keep our hearts in check. God had called the Israelites to a land of plenty and abundance, the way He has called every one of us, who has called on the name of Jesus. Yet I believe it will be wise on our part to pay heed to the words of God Himself. He warns us, saying, when we have eaten and are satisfied, when we have built our fine houses and when all we have is multiplied, we must be most careful. We must be on guard, lest our hearts become proud, and lest we forget that it is God who has blessed us with the ability to produce wealth. History tells us that the Israelites forgot God when they got to better times in the land of Canaan. Before we judge them, we must ask ourselves an honest question: When do we think of God the most? Is it when things are going well or when we find ourselves in trouble? Let us learn from this story, and have our hearts live forever in utter humility and dependence on our Creator and Maker, our Father God. Prayer God, help me not to get ahead of myself. Keep me dependent and grateful. Help me always remember that it is You who has brought me thus far and made my story great. Amen.
