The Weightier Matters of the Law How wonderful it is to hear these beautiful words coming from a man standing on behalf of a condemned man! We see here Paul’s concern for Onesimus. What grace! What love! The story is told of a judge in America who was righteous and God-fearing. One day, in court, there came a case of a young boy in his teens. The boy was fatherless. His crime was that he had unintentionally damaged some property belonging to his neighbors. They dragged the young boy to court. The judge passed the order that the lad pay a huge compensation to the owners of the property. It included the value of the property and other damages. The boy pleaded that he came from a poor family and did not have the means to pay. He wept bitterly in court, but the owners stated that on non-payment of the money and its damages, the boy could go to jail. The court held its breath. The owners of the property looked gleefully at the boy’s predicament and the young lad had a dejected look. The judge suddenly took off his vestments and went up to the court clerk, removed his purse and paid the whole amount. The court marveled at the judge’s benevolence, the accusers were flabbergasted, the boy was forever grateful to the judge. Justice was done and mercy shown. Paul spoke the same of Onesimus who ran away from his master and was saved through Paul’s ministry. The slave was coming back to his master with a letter from Paul. One would wonder why the slave Onesimus had to run away if his master, Philemon, was a Christian. People like to go to a place where they are celebrated, not tolerated. Paul demonstrated God’s heart of love towards Onesimus. Prayer O Lord, teach us to live the gospel in our lives and, if need be, use words to proclaim it. Amen.
