The Pursuit

DAY 5 OF 5

Pursuing God Through Worship

Who we worship is the most important issue in life. Every day, every moment, God is revealing His power and glory. Yet all throughout history, and in my story and your story, people have been deceived to worship and serve created things rather than the Creator.

In the book of Acts, Paul preached in Athens to a very religious crowd to reveal to them who should be the true object of their worship.

In the book of Jeremiah, God uses the metaphor of a cistern (a large container for water) to explain the sin of idolatry. In chapter 2, verse 13 in the NIV, the Lord says, “My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.”

We have access to the overflowing, eternal, living water from God. So why do we turn to broken sources that will come up dry?

What are some of your empty, dried up, broken cisterns? Acceptance, adventure, hobbies, fitness, wealth, fame, success, pleasure, fun, food … all promise to fill us, but the more we dig, the more we lack. Even though some may be good things, if we put them ahead of serving our Savior, we are making them into idols.

We are not meant to serve or glorify created things. Those good things in our lives are the signs and wonders declaring the glory of God, and we owe our worship to the Maker of the signs and wonders! Only God is worthy of our worship!

So let’s get honest. Who or what competes for the throne of your heart? Have you been pursuing a false source? If so, name it. Put it in its rightful place. It was never meant to be your source of life. As you complete this Bible plan, pray that God will empower you to continue your pursuit of Him.

“Father God, You are my Creator. Lord, I want to worship You alone and turn away from the ways I have served created things. God, open my eyes fully to see You as the glorious living water! Help me to grow in my passion to serve, worship, and pursue You alone! In Jesus’ name, amen.”
