The Pursuit

DAY 4 OF 5

Pursuing God Through Prayer

We can know God through the why, how, and what of prayer.

Have you ever driven somewhere while distracted and ended up going the wrong way? No? Just me? Ha! One time while headed to a dentist appointment, my distracted mind put my driving on autopilot, so I ended up at the grocery store! Distraction materialized when I was confident that I knew what I was doing.

Our habits not only put us on autopilot physically but spiritually, too. We can become self-sufficient, going through the motions without realizing that we’re headed in the wrong direction! We need God’s constant guidance.

If you don’t see the need for prayer, it may be because you’re living in self-sufficiency. Prayer isn’t for the competent or complacent. Prayer is for the needy and dependent. The goof-up. The thirsty.

Even Jesus was dependent! He depended on His Father daily. We can see this plainly by how often Jesus went to be alone with God in prayer. Just like Jesus, we aren’t supposed to go about life on our own. We need to understand our utter and desperate need for God at all times—when things are good or bad. You and I are very needy, and that’s okay! Our prayers should be an acknowledgment and even an embrace of our neediness.

What needs, big or small, do you need to bring to God?
