Red Letter Challenge Kids: The 11-Day Discipleship Experience for Kids

DAY 3 OF 11

Day 3: Challenged to Be Like Jesus

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in Him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples…” John 8:31

Do you remember what the snake said to Eve in the garden of Eden? If she ate the fruit, she would BE LIKE GOD. The crazy thing is: the snake was actually right. Our problems start when we want to be God instead of BEING with God.

‘Being God’ might look like this:

  • “I want things done my way.”

  • “I know what’s best for me; I don’t have to listen to you.”

  • “If I don’t understand it, I’m not doing it.”

  • “I don’t need anyone else. I can do it all by myself.”

You need to remind yourself that you are not God.

When you pray, you are folding your hands together and closing your eyes. You cannot see anything or do any work with your hands. That’s needing God.

When you go to church, you are gathering with other people who are not perfect. That’s saying you can’t do life alone.

When you stick with friends and family even when they are annoying you. That’s admitting you need others.

When you read the Bible, you are looking for truth that you do not have. That’s reminding yourself that you don’t know everything.

We think we have a better idea and want to do things our way. That’s the root of sin.

The snake may have been right about one thing, but it was WAY off on everything else.  Sin made us like God in knowing good and evil, but it didn’t scare God away. He always wants to BE with you. He sent Jesus to die so the relationship could be fixed. Because God came to be with us, we are welcomed into His arms.

The snake didn’t get it. Now, you are offered more than just a bite of fruit. You are offered eternal life from a loving God. Now that choice is a no-brainer!

Challenge

Pick one of the five different ways you can BE with God today and spend some time doing it. 1) Friends, 2) Prayer, 3) Scripture, 4) Solitude, or 5) Church
