Red Letter Challenge Kids: The 11-Day Discipleship Experience for Kids

DAY 2 OF 11

Day 2: Jesus Being

Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” Mark 6:31

When Jesus was on Earth, He had only three years of preaching and teaching until He was killed on the cross. That may seem like a long time to us, but three years compared to the whole rest of the thousands of years of history seems like a very short time. With so little time, Jesus must have been very rushed and busy, right?

You probably know what it feels like to be rushed and busy. We try to make sure we squeeze in every last second of playing time.

Sometimes it’s easy to think Jesus would do the same. But when we read about His life in the Bible, He wasn’t ever in a hurry. Not one single time.

Instead of rushing around, Jesus often took time to find a quiet place to rest. This was more than taking a nap. The way Jesus rested was by being with God.

Most of the time, we want to know what the next fun thing is. If all we ever do is rush from one thing to the next, it’ll be easy to start thinking that everything we do is up to us. Because of sin, we forget about God and do not notice Him except when we go to church or remember to pray.

Jesus kept a relationship with God in heaven while He was on earth. He did that by BEING with God through many important habits, primarily these five:

  1. Jesus found friends.

  2. Jesus paused for prayer.

  3. Jesus studied scripture.

  4. Jesus stopped for solitude.

  5. Jesus chose church.

Jesus knew that we would not be able to keep a perfect relationship with God the Father. Although we can try, we will not always remember to just BE with God.

Jesus keeping a perfect relationship with God was part of His promise to us. He promised that even if we couldn’t follow Him the way we should, He would find a way to be with us.

In your rushing, don’t forget Jesus who never had to rush, but was always on perfect time!
