Be careful who you listen to could be viewed as the theme of the second shortest book of the Bible (John 3 is 26 words shorter). John is writing a warning against gnostic heresy and people who claim Jesus Christ didn’t appear in the flesh. He uses the strongest possible language to suggest such thinking is anti-christ and is used to deceive. vs7
John also suggests socializing with such people is dangerous and you should not even encourage conversation vs 10. John admonishes people to love one another in verses 5-6, but this love does not tolerate false teaching.
The key verse in this passage is vs 8.
“Watch yourselves that you might not lose what we have accomplished, but that you may receive a full reward.”
I take from this that John is putting a lot of weight on not only the teaching but the revelation they have received. It is valuable, but if we are not careful, it can be stolen away.
Another way of looking at this is “we put a lot of hard work and energy into your teaching and training and accomplished much. Be aware you don’t throw it all away.
We need to guard our hearts when it comes to doctrine. Don’t allow ourselves to be led astray by those who deny Christ.
