Advent in Israel: The Places of Israel & the Story of JesusSample

Day 20 - Mount Carmel
During the times of the kings, God sent prophets to remind the people of His words. It was during one especially wicked king’s reign that God sent Elijah to Israel to confront the king and his wife Jezebel. Their worship of the false god Ba’al was abhorrent to God.
Elijah called out the prophets of Ba’al to a mountain called Carmel to challenge their false god. It was on this mountain that after the failure of Ba’al’s priest, God caused fire to fall from the sky and consume an offering.
Through the story of Elijah we see that God was constantly calling his people back to repentance, but that repentance was always temporary. They needed an advocate and high priest who could understand their weaknesses and forgive them still, so they no longer had to live under the crushing weight of the law.
With the coming of Jesus we see this perfect prophet, priest, and king who speaks the perfect words of God, intercedes on our behalf, and rules with justice.
How can the law that highlights sin point us to Christ?
About this Plan

As we enter the Christmas season, we are all eager to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the point in history where God descended into humanity to bring life to a broken world. Each day leading up to Christmas, we will provide an overview of the biblical significance of a location in Israel, along with a devotional prompt that will connect that location with the life of Jesus in Scripture.
