Advent in Israel: The Places of Israel & the Story of JesusSample

Day 17 - Judean Wilderness
Jesus’s ministry had begun. We would have expected Him to start it with a bang, but instead He started in isolation in the wilderness. Following His baptism, Jesus spent 40 days in the wilderness fasting and praying.
His incredible discipline showed His obedience and reliance on the Father, as He prepared Himself for the hardship and pouring out of Himself that was to come. At the end of this time, at His weakest physical point, Satan came to tempt Him. He offered Jesus wealth, power, and position if He would only kneel. Jesus resisted the temptation and with that gave a model to follow—resisting with the word of God.
Jesus’s wilderness fasting is an example of how we as Christians believe He fulfilled God’s plan. Jesus came to fulfill what we as humans never could. He came to take our sin and show us a better way.
How can we learn from Jesus’s example and resist temptation in our own lives?

About this Plan

As we enter the Christmas season, we are all eager to celebrate the birth of Jesus, the point in history where God descended into humanity to bring life to a broken world. Each day leading up to Christmas, we will provide an overview of the biblical significance of a location in Israel, along with a devotional prompt that will connect that location with the life of Jesus in Scripture.
