Know Who and Whose You Are

We’re wired to know who we and others are in the world. We ask people what they do, where they went to school, what their family looks like, but those facts don’t come close to defining who you are as a person. You are so much more than what you do for a living, your successes, your failures, your current marital or financial status, or anything else of this world. 

What we put our identity in makes a tremendous difference because it informs the goals we believe we can pursue and how valuable we believe we are. An identity built on our roles, what other people think, or our failures and accomplishments is one built on a very shaky foundation. All of those things can change at the drop of a hat.

But when we put our identity in Christ, our value is intrinsic and independent of external factors. We have a rock-solid foundation that is strong enough to carry us through all that life throws at us. 

You have a choice regarding what you put your identity in, and you can choose a new identity right now.

When you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, you are: 

• A new creation. The old has passed away and the new is here. 


• A joint heir with Christ. 


• More than a conqueror through Him who loves you. 


• A partaker of His divine nature. 


• The righteousness of God in Christ.

How do you walk in this identity? You must claim it—every day.  

1. Take every thought captive. Notice what you are thinking and the old lies you have bought into so you can release them.  


2. Make your thoughts obedient to Christ. Replace the lies with the truth from God’s Word.  


3. Repeat often. Like a muscle, the more you exercise your ability to walk in your new identity, the stronger you will become.

This is not an overnight process. It will take daily effort. And the results you experience as you claim who you are in Christ and deepen your relationship with the Lord are SO worth it.

Prayer

Father God, help me to see through the lies I have bought into. Show me the truth of who I am in Your Word. Strengthen me in my true identity in Christ. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
