SWHW Bible Reading Plan: June 2021

DAY 6 OF 22

Top Takeaway from Somer Phoebus:

After 29 chapters of hard news, Chapter 30 brings a new and welcome tone, and even better, Chapter 31 brings HOPE!

Reread Jeremiah 31:31-34...

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

There have been three covenants made in Scripture, but this newest one is different. The Mosaic covenant (the 2nd of the 3) that was made was written on actual stone. Remember the 10 Commandments? But God takes the time to point out to Jeremiah that this covenant is different. OH SO DIFFERENT. (If there was a soundtrack to Scripture, this would be where the music began to swell.)

God is saying that the stone will no longer be necessary because He is making a way to put His law inside of us, and even more than that, He is going to write it on our hearts.

And this is the part where we need to be so grateful. Because at the time, God's people didn't understand how this would all be possible.

But we know… JESUS.

Jesus came, and He died, and then, He stopped being dead. And through Jesus, we received the gift of the Holy Spirit, the way in which God Himself lives inside of us right now. And through the Holy Spirit, God's law can be written on our hearts.

The new covenant was Jesus.

The answer to every question, the payment for every sin, the deliverer of every human, the Way, the Truth, and the Life.

Father, thank You for Jesus! Thank You for the gift of Scripture to allow us to see the incredible and beautiful story of the way that You redeemed us. Thank You for being our God, and allowing us to be Your people. We are so undeserving of Your love. So in response to this beautiful new covenant made so long ago, and the gift of Jesus, and the good news of the Gospel, please help us to live a life worthy of it all. We love You so much, God. Amen.
