Day 3

Prayer & Purpose

A common question among empty nesters is “What am I supposed to do now?” As you adjust to this new stage of life, it’s a great time to ask the Lord, “What things would You like for me to do now?” We may have “good ideas” but it’s better to have “God ideas.” He has plans for you that will most likely be revealed as you pray, asking Him for that guidance.

We are called to bear fruit at every age and stage and doing so should be life-giving, not tiring. Too often we try to choose our own way. If we are walking on a path that the Lord has not put before us, we will often be tired, weary, and frustrated.

A phrase from school days is “Keep your eyes on you own paper.” We also should keep our eyes on our own purpose. There is no one right way to empty nest. Others will empty nest differently than you do, and that’s a great thing. We can learn from each other’s gifts and talents. You are meant to create your new nest and, as you pray and spend time with the Lord, He’ll show you how. Great news! As we grow older, we can grow wiser!

Seek a heavenly vision. You have been endowed with unique gifts and creativity and are full of purpose — even if you don’t feel like it. Pray to align your heart, will, and ideas with His. May the Lord refresh your soul as you pray, and may He reveal new visions to you. There is no need to wonder what to do. Ask Him to help you see the world through His eyes and He’ll show you His way for you.

James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (NIV)

Hebrews 13:20-21: “Now may the God of peace . . . equip you with everything good for doing His will, and may He work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ . . .” (NIV)
