Raising Spirit-Led Kids

DAY 4 OF 5

 The ABCs of Prophecy

Speaking what God has spoken helps us build homes that both feel and operate like heaven. As our children hear us pray God’s Word over them, they are being positioned to hear His voice themselves. We are to steward their connection with God. From that connection, they become kids who work with the Holy Spirit to have an impact on the world around them.

Hearing God’s voice is an essential element in our children’s relationship with God, since we live by every word that proceeds from His mouth. We also give other people hope by speaking His truth to them. We want our children to know how to hear God in all situations—especially when lies are coming at them. And we want them to see and treat people the way that He does.

My childlike definition of prophecy is hearing God for other people and telling them what He says. Prophecy empowers our children to communicate to others the love that they have pursued. As we teach our children how God speaks to them, it is important for us to teach them that love is the first reason why God speaks to them.

We know that in order to learn a language properly, we must know the alphabet of that language. We can teach our children to use the acronym ABCD. The letters represent the words Always Build up, Cheer up, and Draw near. We should help them understand that when they are listening to God it is like they are panning for gold. In order to find the gold, they must be able to sift through some dirt. This means that there will be times that our kids will hear, see, or sense things that are scary or that do not build up or cheer up. Sometimes our enemy will try to distract our kids with negative messages.

What can we do when our kids see something scary or negative about a person they want to prophesy over? We can ask good questions. Ask God what He is showing them and what He plans to do about it. Get together with your whole family and ask God to speak to you for each other. If something negative comes up, remind them that God talks to us to build us up, cheer us up, and draw us near. Then have them ask the Lord what He is doing about any negative word that was spoken.
