God is Jesus.
2,000 years ago, God showed up in history in the person of Jesus. God became human to be with us. He showed up full of grace and truth, in human form, so that we could have a better and more relatable picture of who God is.
This is one of the most beautiful things about the Christian faith. Our God isn’t somewhere far away. He isn’t indifferent to the challenges we are facing. He isn’t an impersonal force. And He refused to let us go on without having a clear picture of who He is. God wanted us to be able to understand what He’s like, and to know He cares for us.
One of the weird but also really amazing things about Jesus is that He was both fully God, and fully human. So often, when people think about Jesus, they have this idea in their heads that Jesus was always glowing, that He floated six inches off the ground, and He never pooped. We often only think of Jesus as being fully God, and we ignore the fact that Jesus was also fully human. He ate, drank, slept, pooped, and walked around on His own two feet just like we do. He laughed, He cried, He experienced pain, and He felt joy. Jesus experienced the full range of human emotions. He wasn’t some super serious robot. He was fully human. And He was fully God.
Jesus is God. And God is Jesus. As a human, Jesus experienced everything we experience, but He never sinned. He never chose to hurt Himself, others, or the heart of God. He always chose to love people the same way that His Father loved them.
Jesus doesn’t just give us a picture of God to relate to. He gives us a picture of humanity we can aspire to. Jesus invites us to follow His example to become a better human. The kind of human who loves their neighbors, prays for their enemies, turns the other cheek, goes the extra mile, and serves other people. Sometimes people think that becoming more like Jesus means denying their humanity. But it’s actually about discovering what it looks like to be truly human.
God doesn’t just shout His love for us from heaven. He showed us His love in person. The person of Jesus.
