As children many of us were afraid of the dark. Our giant imaginations, if we weren’t careful, could easily picture a horrible monster living under our bed, stealing our rest. (And frankly, everyone else’s too.) Thankfully we would eventually get the invisible visitor to disappear with a small nightlight or a lullaby and at last we would drift to sleep.

While many of us eventually outgrow our fear of physical darkness, there’s another kind of night that can drain our courage at any age. When we get that crushing text or phone call about someone we love. When we’re caught in an addiction, terrified to ask for help. When we go to the doctor for a simple physical and walk out with a complicated diagnosis. When we find a relationship shattered to pieces. Or when we face financial crisis with no clear solution.

This is the kind of night that takes place in the soul. Where we once had clarity, now we have a question. Where we once had solidity, there sits a gap. Where we once could see the other side, we’re now left to wonder if dawn will come in a day or in a decade.

And while there may be a multitude of things we can’t control in the night season, we cannot forget what we DO have.

We have a song to sing at any hour, even when our voice shakes. We have access to the illumination of God’s Word. We have the comfort of His company. He is not a far-off god. He is a God-With-Us. A God-With-You. Yes, you. And yes, even here.
