Go: A 40-Day Journey To The Never Reached

DAY 24 OF 40

Giants

By: Brandon Powell

I remember youth retreats with the speaker calling us to embrace God’s call. I internalized the call as individualistic rather than being with God through the community of believers. Millennials crave authenticity. The good news: we can live out our unique callings in authentic community, if we are intentional.

Community is important. God instilled in us a deep desire to belong and live together. If we look to gain prominence, we step out of his design. We can overcome this temptation by being cognizant of others around us. We start by honoring those who preceded us.

“We are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses,” (Hebrews 12:1 NIV).

Hebrews 11 and 12 paint a vivid picture of heroes of the faith. I’m thankful for those who have done the hard work before me. We all have the honor of standing on the shoulders of giants.

Equally important are your co-laborers. From the beginning, God intended for us to serve together. When possible, go together. Our co-laborers are the best and most difficult parts of life. Interpersonal conflicts frequently cause missionaries to resign. But serving together is a vital part of our faith and requires us to honor and encourage each other (John 13:35).

Our most vital partnership is with the Holy Spirit. Often, we proclaim we’re working for God, as if God isn’t involved. How terrifying! God isn’t absent. He is present and accomplishes this work with us. Moses, plead with God, “If your presence doesn’t go with us, don’t send us.” (Exodus 33:15 NIV). May we have that same heart to go with God.

If you feel called to missions, I implore you to pick a never reached people and join the work. If no one is working there, take someone with you!

Go Together

Write a letter thanking some of the “giants” whose shoulders you’ve stood upon. Tell them how they’ve impacted your life or ministry. You just might be the encouragement they need to keep them going strong.

Find a way to encourage or mentor a younger Christian to find their place in the Great Commission. Pray for them daily and share your wisdom and experience.
