On the Road to Emmaus, Jesus intersects the lives of two disciples who had given up and were headed in the wrong direction. The women’s report of the empty tomb seemed like nonsense to them. Discouraged and disappointed, they were going in the wrong direction. Wanting them to go further with him rather than backward, Jesus appeared to them.

Starting with Moses and the Prophets, Jesus opened their eyes to the truth, causing their hearts to burn within them. Although they were walking in the wrong direction, something in them changed. Something will change in us as we go further with the Master. No matter how much we think we know about him or how much we have experienced, there is more. Go further with Jesus. 

Notice, they were kept from recognizing Jesus. Why would the Lord prevent them from knowing him? Perhaps Jesus first wanted to challenge their hearts, leading them to a place where they longed for more of his presence.

Reaching Emmaus they had completed their journey home, but Jesus appeared to be going further. What would the men do? Would they let him go? Would they go back to their old lives? Would they miss out on all that Jesus was willing to give? 

Countless times in my life, I’ve felt like one of the two on the road to Emmaus—confused and wondering why God hadn’t worked things out the way I thought he should have. Yet each time, Jesus has asked me, “Will you go further with me even when you don’t understand?” 

Perhaps Jesus chose to appear to these two because they are us. He calls us with the same passion and the same strong voice of love we heard when he first called us to follow him. “Don’t stop now,” he is saying. “There is more. Go further.”

Go Further

Ask God to reveal himself to you on whatever road you may be traveling. Ask him to make your heart burn within you and make you long to go further with him.
