We often hear people talking about the faithfulness of God. Some will look back on their lives and testify that God has been true to His word time and time again. Others feel as if they have been cheated by God, even that He has ignored their cries for help. Oftentimes in seasons of difficulty we unfortunately tend to fall more into the second group than the first, doubting that God really has any plan behind what we are experiencing. Yet in this passage, we have assurance that even in the hardest times, God still has a greater purpose behind them all.

In the book of Lamentations, Jeremiah the prophet is writing during the Babylonian captivity of the Jews in Judah. Though he had spent years warning them that God would bring this destruction on them if they would not turn away from their sin, they still continued in it, ignoring what Jeremiah had to say. In reflecting back on the terrible tragedy that he had seen in Jerusalem, the prophet recounts all the pain and suffering around him. Instead of running away, however, Jeremiah finds his rest in God. Though his world was falling apart around him, the prophet thinks back on every morning. He shows how it is a display of God’s mercy towards His people.

Whatever troubles we might come into contact with through this life, every sunrise that we see, every breath that we breathe, every step that we take, all show us the great love and mercy which God has for His people. We can trust in Him even in the worst of times because His faithfulness is not based on our goodness, but on His glory! What is the greatest way that God has shown this to us? In His Son, Jesus! Because of Jesus, God now sees us as righteous. God sees us as His children if we turn away from our life of sin, confess our sin to God, and believe in the death of Christ for our sin, as well as his resurrection. If you are a believer, you can have hope that no matter what comes your way, one day our troubles will be over and we will get to spend forever with Christ! God is faithful and able to save!
