Who Is Jesus For You? Sample

Who Is Jesus For You?

DAY 8 OF 8

Jesus is your eternal security

“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

I am secure in Jesus. You are secure in Jesus. He will never disown us. He will never reject us. He will never abandon us. Others may reject, abandon, or betray us, but not Jesus. He is different. We are safe in his arms, completely safe. There is no reason to fear.

We are not holding on to him. Rather, he is holding on to us. He will not let us go, no matter what.

In one brief sentence, Jesus underscores four times how safe we are in him.

First, “I give them eternal life.” Eternal life is a gift. We don’t receive salvation by earning it. We don’t hold onto our salvation by earning it. It is a gift. From first to last, salvation is a free gift.

Second, “I give them eternal life.” By definition, eternal life never stops. If we could ever lose our salvation, then the life we had was not eternal life, was it? It was conditional life, probationary life, or ten years, three months of life. But it was not eternal. Jesus gives us life eternal, life unending.

Third, “They will never perish.” In case we still don’t get it, Jesus states the same truth negatively. We have life eternal and we will never perish. Never means never, at no time, not ever. If someone who had eternal life ever perished, then that would mean that Jesus’s statement here was untrue, and that’s impossible. This is emphatic.

Fourth, “No one will snatch them out of my hand.” No one—not Satan, not an angel, not a demon, not you, not any human. No one. And, just in case we still struggle to believe the amazing gift of eternal life, check the very next statement in verse 29: “My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father’s hand.”

Could Jesus be more emphatic? You will never lose your salvation. You cannot undo your salvation. It just can’t happen. We are secure, eternally secure, in Jesus’s love.

Some folks say, “That’s a dangerous teaching! If that is true, people won’t be motivated to obey God. They will take advantage of grace.” Perhaps. For some, grace can be dangerous. But for most people, the opposite is true. If God loves me this much, then I want to please him and live for him with all my heart.

Fear doesn’t motivate me to obey. Love does.
