Many Times and Various Ways
The New Testament writer to the Hebrews explains that God often revealed Himself to people in the past and at least some of those revelations were written down as a permanent record for us. Although the person and ministry of Jesus is the fullest expression of God’s character, we can learn much about God by reading the Old Testament reports of His interactions with different people.
When climbing a mountain or solving a problem you start at the base. Although Jesus is the summit of God’s revelation of Himself, Jesus life and purpose only becomes clear when viewed through the lens of the Old Testament. For millennia people have desired to know and interact with God. This generation is no different and where people have a genuine spiritual desire to know Him, God will reveal Himself to them. Our spiritual hunger can be met as we read the Scriptures. One of the most enlightening yet little known ways in which God reveals Himself is through His names. In the Bible, names are not merely a method of identification and designation but a way of definition and explanation. For example, God is a theological label but Father reveals a loving relationship.
