Abraham – the Idolatrous Man
Reading: Gen.12:1-9
Key Verse: “The Lord had said to Abram, ‘Leave your country, your people and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you’”
We have seen that God wants to do new things in and through us. He often uses our fascination with a New Year to introduce us to new opportunities which inspire us to leave the past behind as we take up new challenges. We look now at a series of people who were stirred by God to forget what went before to embrace the new beginnings God had created for them.
Abram lived with his family in the city of Ur of the Chaldeans near what we now call the Persian Gulf. He and his family would have worshipped small false idols of wood and stone like those stolen years later by Rachel (Gen.31:19, 30-35). But God had new beginnings for Abram. Now he would only worship the one true God and enter into an everlasting covenant with Him as His friend (James 2:23). God has chosen us to leave behind our past of worshipping self and things to enter into an everlasting covenant with Him through Jesus Christ and become His child and friend. Our past is passed and we experience a new beginning as we walk with Him on a new journey along the highway of faith.
Prayer: Lord I leave my past behind as I embark on a journey of new beginnings with You
